Green Flag No.9

Kilcornan National School is proud to announce that we have been awarded our 9th green flag for Global Citizenship and Travel! For the past two years, our school community have been engaging with this process under the direction of Ms. Balfry, Ms.Mullane and our green schools committee.

Being located on the busy N69 road, the travel element was a difficult one for us. However, our green schools advisor Fiona advised us that there was lots we could still do! We carried out Idling surveys (in secret!) on our school car park at both 2 and 3 o clock over the course of a week. We undertook speed surveys on the N69 and traffic counts. We launched a No Idling campaign which our very supportive parents signed up to. We also engaged in 'Travel Together Thursdays' and carpooling. Our senior pupils even used their creative writing classes to write letters to the local council asking for traffic calming and a safer route to school.

Our pupils created projects on food miles, sustainable cities such as Hong Kong and the world's first bike city, Copenhagen. This linked into our awareness raising on the Global Goals amongst all classes.

We 'Bin it Home' with our lunch rubbish and all pupils bring reusable bottles. Our Green Schools committee carry out litter and energy checklists after each lunch and ensure the correct items are in each bins and water and electricity is not wasted. We have a great relationship with the local Tidy Towns and are happy to collaborate on projects whenever we can. We take part in Team Limerick Clean Up each year as well as spring cleans and WOW days.

We enjoy having speakers visit us and welcomed people from G.O.A.L and Team Ireland Recycling in the last two years. Our fifth and sixth class have also been succesfully been engaging with the LEAF programme over the past two years.

We look forward to getting back to school to see the new traffic calming measures and the difference they will make to the safety of our school community. A big thank you to the community council and everyone in Kilcornan who worked so hard to achieve this!

We also look forward to celebrating and raising our new green flag together when school returns!
