Junior & Senior Infants Mid Term Update

Oíche Shamhna shona daoibh!! What an amazing first term Junior and Senior Infants have had! Senior Infants were delighted to be back at school in their new classroom and have been such fantastic role models to the new Junior Infants. They helped them settle into our class and get used to the rules and routines for keeping us all safe at school.

We have had great fun getting to know one another in class, during playtime, through SPHE lessons and also playing together in the yard.

Ms. Balfry is so proud of how hard everyone has worked this term! Junior Infants have been busy learning their sounds and sight words. They will be reading very soon! Seniors have been busy revising their phonics and reading. Both classes have been practising the comprehension strategy of prediction and making lots of predictions during our story time each day. We enjoyed autumn scavenger hunts around the school grounds and having P.E in the astro turf pitch. We have learned about how to be a good friend and work together with our friends at our pods and during playtime.  We love singing together and taking movement breaks throughout the day. Our favourite song at the moment is ‘Freeze’.

We have enjoyed so many fun art activities such as making mood monsters, rainbows with crepe paper, autumn printing and spooky Halloween spiders! Each pod in our class has a leader who is in charge of giving out and collecting the books as well as ensuring that everyone at their pod is working together. All pupils have undertaken this responsibility with ease and Ms. Balfry is lucky to have such super helpers!

We were honoured to have Fiona Linnane, composer, work with us this term through the Teacher and Artist in partnership programme. Fiona worked with both classes to create compositions of sound using the pupils themselves and everyday objects.  She taught us about musical instruments and showed the class an opera that we loved! Fiona then helped the class to create their own magical woodland creature that lived in Curraghchase! Each creature was made from a variety of materials, mostly natural ones from the forest. They named their creatures and created their own special skills and back stories. This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to use their imaginations. Fiona even made up a song about these creatures that we all learned! Senior Infants were then invited on a field trip to Curraghchase to take part in making a video about their woodland creatures and investigate the surrounding trees, leaves and nature. We had the most amazing day and time spent in class with Fiona.  A massive thank you to her and also to Mrs. Gleeson for organising the partnership!

We are looking forward to a well earned break after our first term in school! A special thank you to Catherine and Mrs. Wixted who help us each day! Have a lovely Mid Term and check back in with us again for more updates. Slán from Junior and Senior Infants!
