Tá an t-ádh dearg linn go raibh leath thearma iontach againn go dtí seo. Bhíomar an ghnóthach ag foghlaim ón tús na bliana. We’ve had a wonderfully busy few weeks in First Class as we build up to Halloween!
In English, we started new readers called “Looking After Zara” and “The New Suit”. Each Monday, we write our weekend news carefully into our news copies, remembering our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We’re also working through the PAT programme and becoming brilliant at rhyming! Ms. Wixted is so proud of the progress we have made since September!!
As part of our Autumn theme in Oral Language and SESE, lots of pupils brought in treasures for our nature table — including conkers, acorns and colourful leaves. We created some beautiful art by designing wellies and stuck some autumn leaves on our pictures. We also decorated biscuits to look like autumn trees using icing, brown jellies and smarties. We were so excited to eat our wonderful creations.
To celebrate the build-up to Halloween, we decorated our classroom, explored the theme of Halloween in our oral language programme, and learned new Gaeilge vocabulary through fun games. We painted eerie skies and added dark silhouettes to our pictures which were displayed on our classroom windows, making it look extra festive. We’ve also enjoyed listening to some Halloween themed picture books from the library for story time, such as ‘Winnie the Witch’ and ‘Ten Little Monsters’. We have gotten so good at predicting what will happen in the story and making connections to it, which has really helped our comprehension skills.
In Science, we made our very own catapults using lollipop sticks and practiced our aim by flinging pom poms across the room. It was great fun testing our accuracy and seeing how far we could make them fly!
We also celebrated Maths Week with a range of fun activities — from exciting Maths games to drawing patterns and numbers with chalk in the yard. We were very excited about the ‘Guess the Jellybeans’ competition and used our estimation skills each day to guess the amount of jellybeans in the jar.
On Mondays, we look forward to Music Generation. This month we used boom whackers to create different notes and chords, and love playing the game ‘Don’t clap this one back’. We also had the chance to play Ms. Wixted’s harp, and listened to her play a variety of musical genres.
In PE, we’ve been focusing on Athletics. Everyone enjoyed taking part in different relays like frog hops and bear crawls. We also explored athletics stations, with stations ranging from long jumps and obstacle courses. Our 6th class assistants were a great help to show us how it’s done!
Finally, we are all adjusting so well to finishing at 3 o’clock each day. It’s been a big change, but everyone is settling in very well. A special thank you to our fabulous SNA, Karina who is an amazing help to us each day. We are so lucky to have her!!
We’re so proud of all the amazing work happening in First Class and are very excited for more learning and fun after the midterm break. Oíche Shamhna daoibh go léir- lig do scith agus bain taitneamh as an briseadh.
